Bobby-Q Barbecue Heaven
I have a deep affection for good BBQ. It's a lifestyle really. Bring on the meat and sides and *swoon* cornbread and I am a happy camper. Yet so often I go into a barbecue joint, fingers crossed for excellence, and I'm met with overpriced, overcooked entrees. It's a bit of a struggle to find places that do barbecue right. A certain amount of patience and TLC is required for a perfect barbecue meal.
And by golly, I've found it.
Bobby-Q, located just off the I-17 in Phoenix, Arizona, has proven to have all the elements of a perfect barbecue joint. As soon as you enter you smell the smoke, see the rotisserie, and observe tables upon tables of happy customers. From the wait line that comes with most evening visits to the awards lining the walls, it's apparent that Bobby-Q is the place to be.
I first landed upon Bobby-Q when my uncle was visiting me at school. Both of us are major foodies, and we nervously pulled into the parking lot, wondering if Bobby's was worth the hype. As soon as we sat down and ordered an order of Q-Rolls (think brisket taquitos, accompanied by both traditional barbecue sauce and chipotle dipping sauce) we were hooked. Soon the fresh cornbread arrived, still hot from the oven. We gobbled up everything in sight, commenting on the simple, smoky taste of the Q-Rolls...would it be bad to order a few more of those for a meal?
While we were tempted to just order bottomless Q-Rolls (that's not on the menu...but it should be!), we eagerly ordered entrées. I've been to Bobby-Q a number of times now, but my number one entrée is the half rack of St. Louis ribs with mac & cheese and pecan coleslaw. It's decadent, providing a perfect blend of flavors. The ribs give you a deep, smoky taste that can only come from hours of that TLC we discussed earlier - the spice rub on those bad boys is incredible. The mac & cheese is the best I've had, bringing in the comfort of a childhood classic but with richer flavors that all ages can enjoy. My dear mom has come with me to Bobby's before, and she LOVES their mac...mind you, this woman is not a mac & cheese person (an issue for another day). The pecan coleslaw takes a classic side and moves it up a notch, easily reaching perfection. The lightness of the coleslaw really helps the texture of the meal, so I am quick to suggest it for the meal's second side.
After my uncle and I were done with our entrees, we realized that we were too deep to quit now. So a Miss Maggie's Mud Pie was to be split for dessert. We quickly realized how much work was to be done when a mountain of ice cream and cookie crust headed our direction. You could easily split this among three or four people - Miss Maggie knows what's up.
To top off your meal, Bobby-Q gives complimentary, freshly made mini donuts to each table. Dosed in cinnamon and sugar, hot from the fryer (the fryer is located at the front when you come in - make sure to check it out!), a taste of that delicious treat will top off your meal perfectly. The experience will cause you to question: Why doesn't every meal end with donuts?
To put it plainly, if you're ever in Phoenix you must go to Bobby-Q. Everyone leaves with a smile on their face, pleased with the food they've just indulged in. Tired of so-so barbecue? Give Bobby's a try and your faith in the barbecue gods will be restored.
