Gratitude Is In, Not Living The Life You Want Is Out

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that this last Saturday I attended a gratitude workshop hosted by Lindsey Gaterman and Bridget Creel. I've known Gater for the last two years, having worked as her intern when she was being a boss babe in the editorial industry. Now she's a boss babe in the health/fitness industry, not to mention the fact that she runs a super dope Instagram page full of amazing vegan recipes and mindful encouragement. I was introduced to Bridget (Bee) through Instagram, as she and Gater are good friends. These two women are superstars, truly taking each day to live their best lives and encourage others to do the same. 

You can see why I was so excited to attend the workshop they were co-hosting. 

Held at Rise By We, the workshop began with an hour of yoga led by Bee. As someone who has participated in yoga only a handful of times, I was not quite sure what to expect. Yet I was completely confident throughout the course of the class. Bee encouraged each of us to "just focus on our breath" and do what we needed in order to be good to our body. I was instantly refreshed, both mentally and physically after the hour was up. 

Cava catered lunch (yummo, would 10/10 recommend), and the main discussion began: Gratitude. 

I've always considered myself to be a fairly grateful person. I say "thank you", hold doors open for others, and am tickled pink when it's sunny outside. Not to say that any of those things are bad, but gratitude is so much more than saying "thank you". 

I spent an hour sitting, listening to women I admire speak about things they do to practice gratitude. They both take this concept to a literal extent, and honestly, I believe they're spot on. Both of them spend time writing down what they're thankful for, present and future. They believe they deserve what they receive. They both take manifestation to the next level, and you can see their practice through the attitude they give off to others. 

While she was talking, Gater mentioned that she used to look outward for gratitude, not inward. Monetary possessions or what others thought would be her focus for gratitude. Then she shifted her gratitude inward. What did she already have? What was she capable of doing? 

That notion, of inward gratitude, was one of the biggest takeaways I had from the workshop. Later in the discussion, Bee said: 

"The secret to having it all is knowing that you already do." 

That sentence really stuck with me, bringing me back to G's opening thought of inward gratitude over outward gratitude. I think that is really where we get caught up...we look at that house wish we could afford, the promotion we hope we eventually get, or the relationships we don't have in our lives and get stuck thinking about what we don't have. We don't spend nearly enough time rejoicing over what we do have. 

It's not to say that you won't get your dream home, become the CEO of a company, or soon have a relationship that others swoon over, but what I took from this is to stop, be in the moment and be grateful for where you are right now. 

Then, look at those things that you wish for. Picture your life with them. Make them a reality. Gater had example after example of things she had written down being grateful for (things that she did not currently have yet) that later down the road came into her life. Don't make your future reality one of worry, make it one that you've been grateful for since before its existence. 

The last takeaway that has continued to stick with me after the workshop ended was something Bee talked about - giving yourself a reason to get out of bed in the morning. 

She talked about how, contrary to popular belief, she was not someone who always jumped out of bed at 4:45 AM with a skip in her step. While sometimes that is the case, it's not an automatic thing. So she gives herself one thing to look forward to - to be super excited about - so that waking up and getting out of bed is something good! One of the things she has used as motivation is making pancakes for breakfast, so obviously I was all for this exercise. 

Thinking about what I've been struggling with lately, as little as it may seem, getting out of bed and ready to face the world...well, it can be the most difficult part of my day. Whether it's mental health, exhaustion, or just a sticky situation you'd rather avoid, I'm sure you've been there too. So along with joining the gratitude journal fam, I'm also writing down one thing that I'm really excited about the next morning. I'm ready to be STOKED to get out of bed. 

You could've skimmed this little reflection of mine without much thought as to how it applies to you. Fact of the matter is, no matter where you are in life, everyone can use a little gratitude reminder. Everyone can practice gratitude to a greater extent than they were yesterday. Gratitude is in, not living the life you want is out. Don't stay stuck, instead, say "thanks" and practice a life full of gratitude. You've got it going on, time to start living like it.
