The Staple Grocery List That Keeps Me Sane & Healthy

Quickly after high school graduation, I had to learn how to grocery shop, properly, for my own survival. The grocery store had always been one of my favorite places (duh, it held all the snacks), so this was a fairly painless activity. 

There were a few things to consider though. I didn't have a car in college, so grocery shopping was limited to the one time a week I was able to snag a ride. Ah yes, planning ahead was necessary. I also had (ha, as if this is fully past-tense) very little funding for my food needs, so I had to be strategic. Lastly, I was determined to avoid the freshman 15 at all costs, so I did have to consider the nutritious qualities of my shopping cart. 

Needless to say, after a few trial and error runs, four years later I can confidently say that I've got this grocery shopping thing DOWN. I mean, not to toot my own horn, but I'm pretty good at it. Can I put it on a resume? Debateable. Can I pat myself on the back? You'd better believe it. 

Recently, it was brought to my attention that some of my fellow post-grad pals have never had to grocery shop before. Can you believe it? They are missing out on one of life's greatest joys!!! Making a list, crossing things off, and going home to cook delicious meals? I couldn't help but find them depraved. 

OK, OK, I do have a point, I promise. My point is, going grocery shopping can be overwhelming if you don't know what you're after. So I've decided to share my general, weekly list with you, as well as the staples I ALWAYS need in my cabinet. 

Staples: 

Milk (I prefer 2%) 

Eggs

Butter

Oats (y'all know I can't live without these)

Rice (I generally eat brown, jasmine rice) 

Peanut butter 

Weekly needs: 

Bananas 

Berries (I prefer fresh) 

2 types of fresh veggies 

Chicken breasts 

Obviously, the weekly needs list is longer depending on specifics for what I'm eating. But these are things that are ALWAYS on my "must-haves". It also helps that I eat the same thing for breakfast each weekday and my lunches are chicken, rice, and veggies (seasoned beautifully, of course). This isn't to say that clean eating is boring, but when you're trying to save a bundle, simplicity will be your new BFF. 

Don't you fret, I'll be sharing some of my favorite cheap and easy recipes later on, but for now this should give you a headstart!
