5 Tips To Help You Crush Your Interview
I'm on the hunt for a real, post-college, salary-paying job. And to be entirely honest, it's a rough world out there. I won't sugarcoat it and tell you that you'll find a job right after graduation...if you're one of those people, please take a seat for this one. But I will tell you that you can prepare to show off your very best self when you do get an interview. There are five easy tips to nailing the interview...no matter what job it is.
1. Do your research
You can't go into an interview without knowing about the company you're applying for. Do a Google search, check out their social media accounts, and be able to bring in current company presence/news to your conversation. Also, know what their mission statement is and be able to describe it in your own words.
2. Dress comfortably, for your age, and to the degree required
Believe it or not, every interview does not need a stuffy blazer and a skirt suit. Let your personality show in your wardrobe, while still maintaining the level of professionality that the organization requires. Always dress one step up; if the company is jeans and a cute top, wear a skirt and a nicer shirt. Be one level fancier.
3. Practice the "no duh" questions beforehand
There are a few questions you know you'll be *most likely* asked:
- Tell me about yourself.
- Why do you want to work for *insert company here*?
- Why are you the best person for this job?
- What are your greatest strengths?
- What are your weaknesses?
You may not be asked all of these, but you should be prepared to answer each of these questions very well. You may be thrown a few curveball questions, so you need to knock others out of the park.
4. Know your talking points
Before the interview, think of some truly exceptional things you've done, stories that showcase your strengths, and characteristics your employer needs to know. Make a little checklist in your head so you can incorporate these talking points into your conversation when it's natural.
5. Yes, you DO have questions
99% of interviewers will allow you to ask them questions at the end of the interview. Do not let this time go to waste. YES, YOU DO HAVE QUESTIONS, ALWAYS. Think of some beforehand. These questions let you interview your interviewer...a job interview is not just them shopping for you, but you seeing if the job is right for you as well. Here are my go-to questions:
- Why do you like working at *insert company here*?
- What areas are there to grow at *insert company here*?
- Can you describe the company culture?
- What is the company's greatest struggle?
Make some questions that are job specific as well. Make sure your interviewer understands that you are a competent, critical thinking individual that is on top of things.
